The made-for-TV pop-rock quartet created in Los Angeles in 1965 for an American television series of the same name, The Monkees became international superstars on the strength of the quirky show and catchy tunes. The show’s theme, written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, quickly became the band’s signature song.

In addition to appearing in every episode, The Theme appeared on the group’s self-titled debut album which was #1 on the Billboard Top 100 album chart for 13 weeks and has sold more than 5 million copies to date. All told, it has appeared on more than 40 albums.

Its sound synonymous with the late sixties, the song has also appeared in numerous television commercials and motion pictures as a means of marking time in history.
