Where do you currently live?

What is your job title and what does your job entail?
My name is Jesse Atwell and I’m the Chief Marketing Officer for SongVest. I’m focused on generating and driving growth initiatives, general awareness campaigns, and strategic marketing efforts.

How many years experience do you have in your field?
I have over twenty years experience in the music industry. I’ve been an artist, a record label executive, and an artist manager. Some of the companies I’ve worked for include Sony Music, Hallmark Cards, Razor & Tie Records, and Triple 8 Management.

How did you get started in the music industry?
I was lucky enough to grow up inside a recording studio so I gravitated towards songwriting, recording, and performing at an early age. I eventually started a record label and signed a couple of bands before attending New York University’s renowned Master’s program for the Music Business. While attending NYU, I met Cliff Chenfeld and Craig Balsam - founders of the incredibly successful indie label Razor & Tie. They hired me as an assistant and I did everything I could to earn their trust. Eventually, they let me work records for them and I worked everything from metal bands to fitness DVDs to kids records. I cut my teeth at Razor & Tie and I am forever grateful to Cliff and Craig for giving me a shot.

Do you have any accolades or career highlights?
I have a variety of Gold and Platinum Records. That said, I’m most proud of my failures. I attempted to sign MGMT and Lana Del Rey before anyone knew who they were and they were performing under different names. I never signed them, but I’m happy my instincts were eventually validated and these experiences taught me how to become a better negotiator.

Why did you join SongVest? What originally drew you to SongVest?
I joined SongVest in May 2022 because I believe SongVest’s fractional music royalty product SongShares provides a unique value proposition for fans, investors, and rights holders. our CEO, Sean Peace, is a visionary focused on introducing a big, blue-sky idea to a segment of the industry that is ready to be disrupted.

What are some of your favorite things about working at SongVest?
I enjoy working on a big idea with people who are hell-bent on making a difference.

What do you love most about the music industry?
Charles Sanders, one of my favorite professors at NYU, often repeated a phrase that resonated with me, “We’re not selling shoes.” And he is right. The music business isn’t a good fit for someone who thrives on consistency and optimization. It’s chaotic, beautiful, and filled with wonderful personalities. I love it.

What is the best advice you can give to someone who wants to pursue a career in the music industry?
Don’t wait to be picked. Tell everyone in the world what you want to do and then go out and do it. Make it a daily habit to make a difference and help other people achieve their goals.

What is the first concert you ever attended?
Tom Jones

What's something about you that not many people know?
I am a syndicated cartoonist.

What is your favorite hobby?
Playing with my kids!
