What You Actually Get When You Buy Song Royalties

When you buy music royalties, it's important to understand precisely what your purchase represents. A popular song can generate income from several different rights, and those rights may belong to multiple songwriters, performers, record labels, publishers, producers, and other parties. We believe music enthusiasts should understand these distinctions before making a decision. That's why we provide information about the underlying royalty asset and its historical income, along with the documentation describing the rights, duration, fees, and risks involved on every single offering page (browse our current offerings here).
✓

A Regulated Financial Product

With every SongShares® purchase you receive a digital certificate of ownership that lists your name to validate royalty ownership. Via our secure investor portal you can track your royalties and payouts.

✓

Proportional Share of Royalty Cash Flow

With SongVest, you can purchase SongShares®, which are Royalty Share Units associated with specific music royalty assets. These units provide a contractual right to receive a proportional share of royalty cash flow generated under the applicable royalty agreement, after administrative fees. Each offering has its own terms, and the rights involved are identified in its documentation.

✓

Participation in a Particular Royalty Stream

A royalty offering might relate to a songwriter's share of public performance royalties, certain revenues associated with a sound recording, or another defined royalty interest. When you purchase SongShares® connected to that offering, your participation applies to the particular stream being offered. We explain this transparently on all offering pages (for example: “in the ongoing producer’s share of income generated whenever the recording is streamed or reproduced worldwide”).

Public Sales, Auctions & More: Ways to Buy Music Royalties

VIP Auctions for SongShares®

A SongShares® offering can open with a VIP Auction, where you reserve shares before the public sale with a non-binding bid. A hard bid reserves a set number of units at the current price, and a proxy bid raises your bid automatically up to a maximum. Each time all units sell out, the price rises by $1, and winning bidders can buy first once the SEC has qualified the offering.

FAQ: Purchasing
Music Royalties

What exactly am I buying when I buy a SongShare®?

You are buying a right to a portion of a song's royalty earnings, as defined in the offering documents. A SongShare® does not give you ownership of the song's master or publishing copyright.

What is the difference between buying SongShares® and buying a royalty stream?

SongShares® split the royalties from a song into many units, so you can own a small share alongside other fans. Buying a royalty stream means you acquire all or an agreed portion of a royalty interest yourself, based on the seller's listing.

Can anyone buy music royalties?

SongShares® are offered to the public under Regulation A Tier II, and each Offering Circular sets out who can participate. Whole and partial royalty streams are presented to qualified buyers, who receive the financial and rights information for each deal.

Where do the royalties come from?

It depends on what the seller offers, but sources include streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music, radio, sync licensing in TV shows, films and commercials, digital downloads and mechanical royalties. The royalties are collected and processed before they are distributed to owners.

How often are music royalties paid?

It depends on the royalty stream. Each listing states its payment frequency, for example quarterly or twice a year, and payouts go to the bank account linked to your SongVest profile. Timing can vary because each royalty source reports on its own schedule, and you can see upcoming payout cycles in your dashboard.

How much money do I need to buy music royalties?

The price per SongShare® is set for each offering, and you can buy as few as one share. Credit card purchases are capped at $5,000 including the processing fee, and bank payments allow purchases of up to $100,000. Royalty stream prices depend on the listing and, at auction, on the bidding.

What is a reserve price?

A reserve price is a hidden minimum set by the seller and SongVest. If no bid reaches it by the end of the auction, the seller is not required to sell.

What happens after I buy SongShares®?

When the offering closes and the funds reach our escrow account, you sign your subscription agreement electronically. Your SongShares® then appear in your dashboard, where you can track each royalty payment.

How long do I own a royalty stream?

Every listing states the term. Some royalty streams are offered for the life of the copyright, while others run for a fixed number of years.

Are music royalty returns guaranteed?

No. Royalty income rises and falls with how often a song is streamed, played and licensed. SongShares® are speculative and illiquid, and you could lose your entire investment. Please read the Offering Circular before you buy.

Can I buy music royalties from outside the US?

In many cases, yes. Non-US buyers complete identity and anti-money-laundering checks and need a bank that accepts ACH deposits. Residents of Canada cannot participate, and availability depends on each offering and your local regulations.

Is buying music royalties the same as licensing a song?

No. Licensing gives you permission to use a song, for example in a video or an ad. Buying royalties gives you a share of the income the song earns. If you only buy the royalty income, you cannot license the song. Occasionally, full ownership of an asset is auctioned, and in that case the buyer can license it.
